FIJI’S young climate advocate Timoci Naulusala made a strong plea to world leaders to work together and act against climate change when he took centre stage at the United Nations Youth Climate Summit in New York yesterday.
Timoci delivered a powerful speech about the devastating impacts of climate change in Fiji and the Pacific in front of the deputy Secretary-General of the UN, Amina Jane Mohammed, the President of Marshall Islands, Hilda Heine, and a other world leaders.
“We need everyone to understand that we must work together as a team before it’s too late,” the 14-year-old said.
“Speak up.
“This is our time.
“I witnessed the destruction caused by Tropical Cyclone Winston to my school and village and some of us are still reeling from this experience.
“We still feel the impact and that is why I am calling on world leaders to commit to climate action to protect our homes, and all Pacific Islands children.”
This week, Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama said he would heighten the Pacific Islands’ plea to world leaders for serious actions against rising sea levels and extreme weather patterns that were undeniably affecting the region.
As chair of the Pacific Small Island Developing States (PSIDs), Mr Bainimarama said he would use the 74th UN General Assembly (UNGA74) platform in New York to call on world leaders to derive realistic and concrete action plans against climate change.
