Pacific Games silver medallist Jone Koroilagilagi will be flying off to Tashkent, Uzbekistan with gym mate Mikaele Ravalaca to compete in one of the biggest tournaments of their boxing career.
According to Fiji Amateur Boxing Association president Manasa Baravilala, the duo will be traveling to compete in the Men’s World Boxing Championship 2023.
“The event will feature the world’s top boxers, including seven defending world champions, competing for a doubled prizemoney fund of $US5.2m ($F11.5m).
“The gold medalists will receive $US200,000 ($F442,376), the runners-up $US100,000 ($F221,188), and each of the third place is awarded $US50,000 ($F110),” he wrote in a press release statement.
Koroilagilagi, who is also the Fiji team captain, will feature in the 54-57kg Featherweight division while Ravalaca competes in the 51-54kg Bantam category.
“A total of 668 boxers from 113 countries are set to compete across 13 weight categories at the Men’s World Championships.
The field includes seven world title holders who will be looking to come out on top again.”
Traveling under the watchful eyes of national boxing coach Cam Todd, the duo will be leaving Fiji next week Thursday.
“The boys will be coached and managed by incoming national boxing coach Cam Todd who coached David Tua to the junior and senior world amateur championship and an Olympic medal in Barcelona,” the statement said.
