A new chapter in Fiji’s Football history was unveiled at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Marrocco, when Fijian referee Torika Delai made her FIFA World Cup debut, taking charge of the Group C match, between Norway and Ecuador.
She became only the second referee from Fiji ever to officiate at a FIFA World Cup event, following in the footsteps of pioneering referee Finau Vulivuli, who made her mark at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in 2016, and was previously on panels in 2008, 2010, 2012, and 2016.
Her rise highlights Fiji FA’s dedication to empowering women as referees, coaches and leaders as part of its strategic plan.
In a Facebook post Fiji Football Association President Rajesh Patel said Delai’s achievement was a proud day for the nation.
“Torika’s appointment to officiate at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup is a moment of great pride for Fiji. It reflects years of commitment, perseverance, and hard work,” Patel said. “She has shown that our referees can reach the highest level of football.
Her achievement will inspire many young Fijians — especially women — to believe that they too can excel in this sport.”
The 35-year old’s historical achievement is a testament to her continuous dedication to football officiating, in a long career that has seen her rise from our local competitions to regional tournaments and now rewriting Fiji and Oceania football history as only the second Fijian women to officiate at a FIFA World Cup event.
Her rise will surely be an inspiration for upcoming referees in Fiji and the Oceania.
