Fijian weightlifter Daniel Shaw is excited for the opportunity to train alongside some of the best lifters in the region as he heads to Samoa today for a week-long elite training camp.

Organised by the Oceania Weightlifting Federation, the camp will help Shaw prepare for major competitions this year including the U23 Championships in Melbourne, the World Juniors in Lima, Peru, and the Pacific Mini Games in Palau.

Shaw believes the camp will be a great learning experience giving him a chance to improve his skills in a high-performance environment.

With the Oceania Weightlifting Institute being re-established, he will be training under expert coaches and alongside top athletes helping him push himself to new levels.

“I’m not looking for anything huge right now, but this is a great opportunity to gain experience and push myself in a competitive environment,” Shaw said.

“The camp will give us a chance to train with others in our category, which will push us all to improve.”

Shaw will be joined by fellow Fijian weightlifters Taniela Rainibogi and Nehemiah Elder, who are also looking to sharpen their skills before upcoming international events.

The Pacific Mini Games in Palau later this year will be an important competition for them, and this training camp will help them get ready.

Shaw is also recovering from an injury, so his focus is on getting stronger while still making steady progress.

He hopes to improve his personal bests and gain valuable experience by training with top athletes from the region.

This camp will be a big test for all three lifters, but it is also a great opportunity.
