Exposure for local teams has been a vital aspect of the Fijian Cup, as its touch rugby competition unfolded the sporting festival at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka yesterday.
These were the sentiments of Luke Chapman, the experience director of the three leg tournament which began with touch and also includes rugby league nines and rugby sevens and rugby tag as well.
“You don’t really get this opportunity unless you had a World Cup or the likes of it,” Chapman highlighted.
“They get an opportunity to play with some players that they’ve seen on TV or on YouTube or World Cups and stuff, and so that just adds to it.”
Local teams from around the country such as Flamingo and Waqavuka among others were in full force yesterday, with Chapman also acknowledging the local players who were part of the international teams as well.
He also acknowledged the international teams taking part and the formidable level of play they brought to the field.
“‘The same principle applies, where we get to have the international flavor with the Fijian flavor, which I think is quite different,” he said.
“And it’s special in its own way, which is great for our international players to run against.”
The touch rugby leg ends today.
