As the Fiji Airways Fijian 7s team prepares for the Vancouver 7s this weekend, head coach Osea Kolinisau is emphasising a critical shift in their approach to the breakdown.
After reflecting on past performances, Kolinisau stressed that controlling the ruck will be essential to their success.
“In the last tournament, we fell on the tackle but didn’t fight on the ground. We are making sure to fight on the ground, doing long placement,” he said.
“Just buying one or two seconds for your second man can be the difference in securing and losing a ruck.”
This tactical evolution aligns with the team’s broader development including the return of key players and the integration of fresh talent.
Kolinisau has been particularly pleased with Waisea Nacuqu, who is fully fit and bringing more than just skill to the squad.
“It’s promising to see him around the boys, sharing his experience,” said Kolinisau.
Nacuqu’s leadership is helping the team maintain composure, particularly with younger players adapting to the rigors of the international stage.
One such player is Mosese Naura, whose competitive spirit has been evident in training.
“He’s always up for the challenge, asking senior players questions and getting up to speed on how we do things,” Kolinisau noted.
Naura’s willingness to learn from experienced teammates has allowed him to quickly assimilate into the squad, further solidifying the team’s cohesion.
The national side will meet Uruguay in its first match this Saturday at 7.18am. They take on the USA in their second pool clash at 12.45pm.
Their final pool match is against Spain on Sunday, February 23, at 6.52am.
The Vancouver 7s ends with the final on Monday.
