The President of the People’s Alliance Party (PAP), Joe Dimuri, has highlighted the critical role of youth in shaping Fiji’s political landscape, following a large turnout at the PAP Special Youth Assembly General Meeting at the Suva Civic Auditorium yesterday.

“It’s often said that politics is power. Power is achieved by numbers and must be exercised responsibly and in accordance with the rule of law. In democratic settings, it’ll forever be a game of numbers,” Mr. Dimuri said on social media.

He noted that Fiji’s youth, aged 18-35, constitute the largest voter demographic, making them “kingmakers” in any election.

“Given the huge turnout yesterday, I am convinced our youths understand that this luxury lies in their court. They are the nation’s most powerful political force,” he said.

Mr. Dimuri acknowledged that in previous elections, many in this age group had not voted, but expressed optimism that this trend would change in the upcoming 26th General Election.

“Many had tried to discard them as having lost interest in the party. But they are well in the fold. The turnout was an explicit reflection of their unwavering confidence in the party, its leadership and what it stands for,” he said.

He added that youth influence extends beyond voting numbers.

“Their value is not only defined by their voting numbers but how useful a resource they can be on the campaign trail. As the party’s National President, I have no doubt we will do much better given the renewed commitment and enthusiasm seen yesterday. And I say this with the greatest of optimism.”
