THE SportsWorld Fijian under-20 rugby team has entered its final phase of preparation for next month’s Super Rugby U20 competition in New Zealand, with a focus on refining their overall gameplay and conditioning.

The squad has centralised its training in Suva, bringing in western-based players to train together while providing accommodation and meals.

Assistant coach Saiasi Fuli said the current phase is crucial in ensuring players are physically and mentally prepared for the high-intensity competition.

“There is a lot of clarity work and integration happening this week,” Fuli said.

“We want the players to understand the competition demands and how to adapt under pressure.”

Training sessions at Bidesi Park have focused on improving structure, game awareness and skill execution, addressing areas that needed work from last year’s Oceania Rugby U20 Challenge.

The squad has been working on connecting different aspects of play, ensuring their attack and defense systems are well-coordinated.

This year’s Fijian U20 squad is one of the youngest ever assembled, with several 17 and 18-year-olds included as part of a long-term development plan.

With no Junior World Championship this year, Fiji Rugby is using the Super Rugby U20s as a key platform to prepare these young players for the future.

“We want to develop them in a two-year program and help them adjust to high-level competition,” Fuli added.

The squad remains focused as the tournament draws closer, with preparations set to intensify in the coming weeks before they depart for New Zealand.

Meanwhile, the competition will take place from March 15-22.
