The Fiji Truth and Reconciliation Commission (FTRC) will host its first community awareness session this Saturday, August 9, at the Fiji National University’s Nasinu Campus Main Hall.

The event aims to provide a safe and inclusive platform for public engagement, allowing the Commission to raise awareness about its mandate, encourage submissions, and build public confidence in Fiji’s ongoing reconciliation process.

The FTRC, established as an independent body, is tasked with examining the country’s past political upheavals — from 1987 onwards — and their impact on individuals and communities.

This includes investigating physical and emotional harm, loss of life and property, and systemic injustices.

“Our mandate is rooted in truth-telling, reconciliation, and national healing,” a Commission statement said. “We believe your story matters. Your voice can bring healing,” states FTRC in a social media post.

The Commission is inviting individuals who may have suffered harm — whether physical, emotional, financial, or through violations of their human rights — to come forward and share their experiences.

Community members are also encouraged to submit any information they believe may assist the Commission’s work.

“Our goal is to foster unity in a society where everyone feels safe, equal, included, and able to thrive,” the statement continued.

Those interested in making a submission or speaking during the session are encouraged to fill out the contact form provided by the FTRC.
