The Fiji Airways Fiji men’s 7s team will begin its Olympic Games gold medal defence against hosts France on July 24 in Paris.

World Rugby has released the pools for both men and women seeing 12 teams pitted into three groups.

Fiji men’s side is in Pool C with France, the United States of America and debutant Uruguay.

New Zealand heads Pool A with Ireland, South Africa and Japan. Series winner Argentina is in Pool B with Australia, Samoa, and Kenya.

In the women’s category, the Fijiana 7s side finds itself in a demanding situation, having been drawn in Pool A with New Zealand, Canada, and China.

Australia is in Pool B with Ireland, Great Britain and South Africa while France, USA, Japan and Brazil make up pool C.

World Rugby Chairman Sir Bill Beaumont said rugby sevens is an exciting brand of rugby that promises an epic festival in the French capital.

“Rugby 7s is a fantastic engine to grow our sport and on its third Olympic appearance is already proving to be one of the attractions of the Games with record enthusiasm for tickets, mouthwatering rivalries, and two strong French national teams hoping to achieve their Olympic dreams on home soil,” Sir Beaumont told World Rugby.

All the action will take place at Stade de France, which was the venue for the opening match and final of the Rugby World Cup 2023.

The men’s competition will take place from July 24-27 July with the women’s tournament following on July 28-30.

The men’s gold medal match on July 27 will see the first team sport gold medal of the Games awarded.
