Fiji to send team to Oceania badminton event

FIJI badminton will compete in the 2018 Oceania Badminton Championships which will be held in Hamilton, New Zealand next month.

Fiji coach Brent Munday said the preparation was on track.

“It’s the second time I am coaching Fiji after having coached them in the South Pacific Games in 2011 and I am taking a squad of six men and five women to the Oceania Badminton Championships,” he said.

“We also got an Oceania camp which will run prior to our first tournament which is in North Harbour in Auckland before we travel down to Hamilton for the men’s and women’s competition.”

Munday had been training a group of badminton players at the Yat Sen School hall in Suva yesterday. “There are nine men and nine women in the squad and they are all in for the selection for the Commonwealth Games because there is a different format that they play compared to the Commonwealth Games. The Oceania Badminton Championships is obviously the men’s and women’s competition whereas the Commonwealth Games is the mixed competition,” he said.

“We will take five men and five women to the Oceania Badminton Championship and we would probably take four men and four women to the Commonwealth Games.”

The Oceania Badminton Championships will be held from February 8-11.
