FIJI has been confirmed as the host nation for the 2026 edition of the Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) Prime Minister’s Cup (PM Cup), marking a significant milestone in the region’s sporting calendar.

In a symbolic handover ceremony yesterday, the Fiji Football Association (Fiji FA) passed the official MSG baton to Fiji Sports Commission chairman Peter Mazey to kickstart preparations for the regional football tournament.

The baton represents more than just the upcoming tournament; it symbolises Melanesian brotherhood, youth empowerment, and a shared commitment to sporting excellence across the region.

Speaking on behalf of Papua New Guinea, Mohammed Yusuf, CEO of Fiji Football Federation, congratulated Fiji on the honor of hosting and commended PNG for their successful staging of the Games in the past.

“The MSG PM Cup baton carries the hopes of our people and our athletes,” a PNG representative said.

“Today (yesterday), we pass not only a symbol, but a legacy to Fiji—a legacy of culture, competition, and connection.”

Receiving the baton for Fiji, Peter Mazey expressed pride and determination in delivering a memorable event that reflects Fiji’s warmth, diversity, and competitive spirit.

“Fiji accepts this baton with humility and pride,” Mazey said.

“We are ready to welcome Melanesia to our shores and showcase not only championship sport, but the spirit of vei lomani—love, respect, and unity for our Melanesian brothers and sisters.”

The baton was also formally passed on to Assistant Minister for Sports, Aliki Bia, following his appointment as the new Chairperson of the MSG Secretariat, reinforcing Fiji’s leadership role as host nation for the MSG PM Cup Games in 2026.

Bia acknowledged the significance of the moment and reaffirmed the Government of Fiji’s commitment to delivering world-class Games in partnership with regional stakeholders.

“This baton represents a responsibility we embrace with pride,” Mr. Bia said. “As Chair of the MSG Secretariat and as host nation, Fiji will work closely with our Melanesian brothers and sisters to ensure the 2026 MSG PM Cup Games strengthen regional unity, celebrate our shared culture, and inspire our future athletes.”

Bia also indicated that the Games are expected to coincide with Melanesian Arts and Cultural Celebrations in 2026, further highlighting the richness of Melanesian heritage.
