The Fijian Government intends to complete the national digital switchover exercise for the Walesi app by June 2022, Attorney-General and Minister for Economy, Civil Service and Communications Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum told Parliament recently.
He said the analog switchover date meant all broadcasters would cease to transmit on the analog platform.
“It will regularise current practice and mandate that old television broadcasters free to air in a view to become tenants of the wireless platform,” Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said.
“And wireless will offer alternatives to the wireless platform, equitable access and geographical reach.”
He said this meant that all the infrastructure costs in the transmission would now be borne by wireless.
“In other words, television companies no longer have to invest in expensive infrastructure.”
He said the staggered approach to the switchover would also ensure all broadcasters have sufficient time to transition from the analog to digital television platform and administrative measures have also been put in place.
