Government has set an ambitious goal of providing electricity to 100 per cent of Fijians by 2029.
Speaking at the EFL Development Partners Roundtable in Suva yesterday, the Ministry of Public Works, Meteorological Services and Transport’s director of Energy, Mikaele Belena, said their key electricity sector goals also included achieving 100 per cent renewable energy generation by 2035 and reducing Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions by 36 per cent in line with Fiji’s commitments under the Paris Agreement.
“These visions are also grounded in Fiji’s Low Emission Development Strategy, the forthcoming National Renewable Energy Roadmap, and our commitments to strengthen energy access, grid reliability, and climate adaptation,” Mr Belena said.
“In this context, EFL’s $2billion Renewable Energy and Grid Investment Program is a critical national priority.
“The Department of Energy strongly supports this program, because it addresses the most urgent needs in our sector; new firm and intermittent renewable generation, hydropower expansion, large-scale solar and BESS integration, and modernisation of our transmission backbone across Viti Levu, Vanua Levu and our maritime islands.”
He said Government was committed to provide sustainable, reliable, and affordable electricity to all Fijians to enhance its effort in ensuring socio-economic development and improving their quality of life.
“These commitments are clearly communicated and articulated in our national planning documents, such as, the National Development Plan (NDP) 2025-2029 and Vision 2050 and the National Energy Policy (2023–2030).”
