FIJI will continue to support a moratorium on deep-sea mining (DSM) until it is updated on the science behind the extractive industry.

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka clarified this to the media during an interview yesterday.

“At the moment we support the deep-sea mining moratorium until we get the scientific report from (the) science people,” Mr Rabuka said.

“It’s the same stand we had for Fukushima nuclear wastewater and we always work with science and at the moment, we do not have a comprehensive and conclusive science report to give the leaders the comfort to say, lift the moratorium.”

When asked about the calls by NGOs for the Government to completely ban DSM, Mr Rabuka said they would take the views into consideration.

“We will look at the concerns from the NGOs and then we’ll decide. It is the Government that decides, not the NGOs.”
