The Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation has reassured international visitors that Fiji remains a safe and secure destination, despite a recent advisory issued by the United Kingdom Foreign Office regarding potential methanol risks in alcoholic drinks.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation, Viliame Gavoka, said Fiji’s tourism operators continue to uphold the highest safety standards and that visitor welfare remains a top priority for authorities.
Responding to the UK advisory—which listed Fiji among countries with possible methanol poisoning risks despite no confirmed cases—Gavoka suggested the move may stem from last year’s isolated “Pina Colada” incident.
He noted that tests conducted in both Fiji and New Zealand found no harmful substances in the drinks involved.
Gavoka emphasised that the Ministry, working closely with the Ministry of Health and Medical Services, Fiji Police Force, diplomatic partners and the tourism industry, continues to monitor visitor safety and maintain transparent communication.
“The safety and security of our citizens and visitors alike remains our highest priority,” he said, adding that authorities will continue enforcing measures to ensure Fiji remains a trusted and welcoming destination for travellers.
