With sunshine and bright weather currently gracing New Year’s Eve in Fiji, the Fiji Red Cross Society is urging communities, particularly in the Western Division, to remain vigilant against the surge of climate-sensitive diseases following the recent flood.
Diseases such as leptospirosis, typhoid, dengue fever, and diarrhoea (LTDD), are known to spike during and after flooding events.
In a statement, Fiji Red Cross Society director general Ragigia Dawai said after the flood, the risk of disease was high.
“We are calling on everyone to take simple but vital steps to protect themselves and their families,” she said.
Fiji Red Cross Society said they had assessed 75 households and assisted over 295 people in the Western Division over the last three days since their response began.
“There are also hotspot areas for LTDD in the Western Division, making it even more critical for residents to stay vigilant and take preventative measures,” Fiji Red Cross said.
Ms Dawai further acknowledged Frezco Beverages Ltd and National Disaster Management Office for their effective collaboration.
“Clean drinking water is crucial at this stage, and this contribution will go a long way in supporting communities as they recover.
“Strong partnerships are essential in times like these, and we deeply value the support and teamwork that have made our efforts more impactful.
“By taking these steps, we aim to mitigate the risk of disease outbreaks and support affected communities in their recovery.”
If you are experiencing symptoms of any of these diseases, such as fever, vomiting, diarrhoea, or unusual fatigue, you are urged to seek medical attention immediately.
