Fiji’s hope of qualifying for the 2026 ICC T20 Women’s World Cup has been dashed after the national side lost its final pool match yesterday.
The Fiji national women’s team was outclassed by Vanuatu which won by 91 runs in the East-Asia Pacific qualifier yesterday at Albert Park in Suva.
The result meant that Fiji has failed to qualify for the semi-finals and their world cup dream cup short.
A disappointed team manager Mereoni Uluiviti said they were expecting a different result, but their performance yielded otherwise.
“I think Vanuatu was just too good for us. We came prepared, the girls were synced up but this is the result of our game.
“My expectation was otherwise because I believed as we grow, we learn from our mistakes, we learn from our weak areas, but it did not turn out in our favour. I do thank the girls for taking the field, doing – maybe that’s the best they can perform today (yesterday) but they were so many rooms for improvement in terms of our shortfalls and mistakes, what was supposed to be maintained but they weren’t.
“The game does not end today (yesterday) maybe we will compete for ranking now but overall, I just want to thank the girls,” she said.
What was even more disappointing that the team could not defend their turf.
“We are not going to participate in the World Cup qualifier because whichever team wins this tournament will go to the global qualifier next year so yeah next time around.”
The global qualifier which Fiji will not compete in, will be held in Nepal next year.
