The COVID-19 break has created a hype among the golf fanatics, leading to a record number of participants at the 52nd Fiji Golf Open championship at the Denarau Golf and Racquet Club.
Golf Fiji tournament director Rohit Chandra said the field was quite big for the three-day tournament and turnout had been very good.
“I have been playing golf for the past 20 years and one thing I realised was the number of participants is big and we managed to get it after many years,” he said.
Chandra, who is also the Ba Golf Club captain, added that the pandemic had created the hype and these numbers of over 150-plus participants was never seen before.
“People are always looking forward to play in Fiji and it is a good start which I believe it would only get bigger and better.
“Since Golf Fiji and Fiji PGA have come together for the first time to host this event, it only boosts the sport as it matches the technical aspect combined with professionals at elite level, which makes a huge difference, which shows why the turnout is so good.”
He said the overseas-based amateur participants had another chance to come and attend a trial at Natadola for consideration for the Pacific Games in November.
“Those participating here, if they perform well in Natadola, then directly they might be part of the Pacific Games squad.
“Golf Fiji has currently selected eight players from Fiji for the PG squad, however, these guys from overseas have a chance – which are the Fiji Golf Open and the Natadola Open and after two trails, we might automatically select some players from overseas,” said Chandra.
