Drug traffickers are attempting to exploit Fiji’s geographical location as a transit route to larger international markets.
This was shared by Acting Prime Minister and Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources Filimoni Vosarogo following the arrest of four South American nationals and two Fijians in relation to the seizure of more than 100 bags of cocaine in Tavua.
“The recent drug bust in Tavua is a significant operation by the Fiji Police Force and counterpart agencies, here and abroad,” Mr Vosarogo said.
“It demonstrates their heightened vigilance and commitment to protecting our sovereignty.” Mr Vosarogo said the Government would not allow Fiji to become a trafficking corridor for dangerous drugs, stressing that the impact of drugs on society, particularly on youth, families and future generations, was devastating and required urgent action.
“The arrest of foreign nationals sends a strong and unequivocal message to international drug syndicates: Fiji is not an easy target.
“Our borders are being strengthened, our laws are being enforced, and those who attempt to use our country for criminal gain will be detected, arrested, and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”
He reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to a whole-of-government and whole-of-society approach in combating drug, including stronger border controls, enhanced inter-agency co-operation, collaboration with regional and international partners and support for community-based prevention and awareness initiatives.
He also commended the Fiji Police Force and all agencies involved for their professionalism and dedication, stating that the fight against illegal drugs remained ongoing.
Police have confirmed that four South American nationals and two Fijians are currently in custody. No further updates have been provided at this stage.
