Fiji Netball has paid tribute to former Fiji Pearls captain and head coach Unaisi Rokoura, who tragically drowned over the weekend.

In a statement issued last night, Fiji Netball said it was “with profound sadness” that the organisation acknowledged the passing of one of the nation’s most accomplished and respected sportswomen.

“Una was not only a remarkable athlete and coach but also a mentor and friend to many,” said Fiji Netball President RubyAnn Sorovaki.

“We are heartbroken by this tragic loss. Many of us will now be reminiscing and sharing the different journeys and experiences we shared with this great friend and sportsperson. Her legacy in Fijian and Pacific sport will live on through the many players and colleagues she influenced.”

Ms Rokoura, who first represented Fiji in netball at just 17, went on to have an illustrious international career. She played in six Pacific Games, two Commonwealth Games, and two Netball World Championships, captaining the Fiji Pearls from 1997 to 2006.

A gifted multi-sport athlete, she also represented Fiji in hockey, rugby 15s, basketball, and beach volleyball, earning admiration for her athleticism and dedication to sport.

Her passion for developing athletes saw her transition into coaching and administration roles. She served as Fiji Pearls Head Coach from 2009 to 2013 and again from 2022 to 2024, and was Country Coordinator for NetGO Fiji between 2017 and 2022.

Ms Rokoura also shared her expertise across the region, coaching the Papua New Guinea Pepes from 2015 to 2017 and serving as a consultant coach for the PNG Under-21 team.

At home, she inspired generations through her work as a coach and player with CBM Netball Club and as a fitness instructor at the University of the South Pacific Gym between 2007 and 2014.

“Her impact on and off the court will be remembered with immense respect and gratitude.”

“Una gave her life to sport and to the empowerment of others,” Mrs Sorovaki said.

“Her spirit, leadership, and kindness will continue to inspire us all.”
