Fiji Met warns of possible cyclone development

The Fiji Meteorological Service says the low-pressure system near the Solomon Islands has intensified into Tropical Disturbance TD03F, with conditions now favourable for further development.

TD03F is expected to track southeast between Vanuatu and Fiji over the coming days, and forecasters warn there is a moderate to high chance the system could develop into a tropical cyclone after the next 48 hours, with its centre likely to strengthen near Vanuatu.

Expected impacts for Fiji include fresh to strong northerly winds from late Sunday or early Monday, with averages up to 55 km/h and gusts up to 80 km/h.

There will be possible near-gale or gale-force winds depending on the system’s eventual strength and track.

Also, persistent rain across the country next week is possible due to an active trough of low pressure.

Fiji Mer adds a high risk of flash flooding, particularly in low-lying and flood-prone communities is also possible.

The FMS says it will continue to monitor TD03F closely and issue further updates.

Members of the public are urged to stay informed, stay prepared, and avoid unnecessary travel in adverse weather.
