THE Fiji men’s touch rugby team is on a mission at the 17th Pacific Games in the Solomon Islands.

Despite a shaky start, the national side regrouped to stay on track with their ambitions.

Captain Keith Nauluvula said they want to stand at the highest point of the podium in this year’s Games.

“The last time touch rugby won gold was in 2007 so Fiji has not won gold after 16 years. We struggle to find sponsorship because that provides leverage. So, our aim is not only win gold but provide a pathway that can get businesses to support our sport because we know we can make things happen like winning medals.

“This team can win gold not just here at the Pacific Games but we also have the World Cup coming up I’m England next year,” Nauluvula explained.

Fiji defeated the host nation Solomon Islands 12-4 on Tuesday with a performance the captain though was better than what they displayed on Monday.

“We thoroughly discussed what went wrong in the opening match against Samoa, we regrouped, worked on those one percent errors and I’m glad the boys settled down and delivered.

“We committed some basic errors especially in defence but that has been addressed and our boys know what needs to be done now.”

Fiji men’s touch is ranked in the tournament’s top four poised to feature in the semi-finals today.
