Fiji lifters aim for glory

SIX weightlifting athletes from Fiji have embarked on a six-week training camp in Apia, Samoa, under the guidance of head coach Henry Elder.

This intensive camp marks the beginning of a positive start to 2026 for the team.

According to coach Elder, the athletes have been eagerly anticipating this training camp as an opportunity to enhance their knowledge and gain valuable experience.

“This training camp is for six weeks, it’s an intensive training camp,” said Elder.

“Fiji and Samoa will be training together; during this period there be will other countries also taking part in the camp, some of the counties will be Marshall Islands, Papua New Guinea, Nauru, New Zealand and Australia.”

He adds the Fijian athletes participating in this camp are all aiming to qualify for the upcoming Commonwealth Games.

“Team Fiji will be in Samoa for the longest period, and the athletes we are taking to this camp are all the athletes who are sparring to qualify for the Commonwealth Games this year.”

Elder is optimistic about the team’s performance this year and expressed gratitude for the support received from the Government, sponsors, and families.

Acknowledging the financial backing from the Government as crucial for the team’s participation in such training camps, Elder extended his thanks to all supporters for their unwavering encouragement.

The team departed for Samoa yesterday, ready to make the most of the training camp and work towards achieving their goals in weightlifting.
