Fiji keen to host 2018, hopes to secure funding

THE Fiji Tennis Association is hoping to secure funding to host the Oceania Tennis Championship in 2018.

Association president Richard Breen said after hosting the championship for the first time, the response from the 14 nations represented and officials had been positive.

“For the Oceania, this is the fourth time we’re holding this tournament. It was held twice in New Caledonia, and the last one was in Australia,” Breen said.

“This is the first time for Fiji to host it and we’re pretty keen to host it for the second time. The comments from players is that it’s a pretty amazing venue. They love spending time in Suva and people are enjoying how the tournament is running and organised. It has been a while since the last South Pacific Games to have such a big tournament like this.

“We do have other tournaments like the Fiji Open, but it’s not a national representation.”

Breen said the cost of hosting a tournament as such which had seen officials from Tennis Australia officiating at the game was close to a $100,000 and the association was supported throuth the help of the Fiji Sports Commission and sponsors.

“We’re looking at talking to Government and other stakeholders to help us,” Breen said.
