The Government has issued a strong travel advisory urging Fijians to avoid large parts of the Middle East, warning that the security situation remains unpredictable and could escalate without notice.
In its weekly update released yesterday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and External Trade placed multiple countries under its highest alert level, advising nationals not to travel under any circumstances — including transit through major regional airports.
Countries listed under Level 4 (Do Not Travel) include Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Qatar, Iraq, Iran, Israel, Syria, Lebanon and Yemen. The advisory warns of “extreme risk to safety” and urges any Fijians in these locations to leave immediately if it is safe to do so.
A second tier warning was also issued for Jordan, Oman and Saudi Arabia, where travellers are advised to reconsider all non-essential trips due to heightened risks.
Fijians currently in the region are being encouraged to consider voluntary evacuation while commercial flights remain available. Authorities say those unable to leave should shelter in place, avoid high-risk areas and strictly follow local security instructions.
The Ministry has also stressed the importance of staying connected, urging nationals to register with Fiji’s embassies in Abu Dhabi and Jerusalem to receive timely updates and assistance.
Meanwhile, a global travel alert has been issued, with widespread airspace closures across the Middle East expected to disrupt international flight routes. Travellers are advised to check with airlines before departure, even when flying to destinations outside the region.
Emergency contact lines for Fiji’s diplomatic missions remain active for citizens requiring urgent assistance.
