The Fiji Airways Fiji Men’s National 7s team delivered a stunning performance to book their place in the semi-finals of the Valladolid 7s, thrashing New Zealand 40-0 in a one-sided quarter-final clash.
Fiji dominated from start to finish, denying New Zealand any opportunity to get on the scoreboard while showcasing their attacking flair and defensive discipline.
George Bose opened the scoring in the third minute, crossing for Fiji’s first try to give his side a 5-0 lead. The pressure continued to mount on the Kiwis and Tomasi Vuluma added another try three minutes later, helping Fiji take a commanding 12-0 advantage into halftime.
The Fijians raised the intensity even further in the second spell.
Terio Veilawa struck first after the restart to extend the lead to 19-0 before Bose grabbed his second try of the match to make it 26-0.
With New Zealand struggling to contain Fiji’s pace and ball movement, Akuila Dranivotua crossed in the 13th minute to stretch the margin to 33-0.
Nacani Boginisoko put the finishing touches on a dominant display with Fiji’s sixth try of the match in the closing stages, sealing an emphatic 40-0 victory.
The result sends Fiji into the first semi-final where they will face Australia at 8.44pm today.
The tournament final is scheduled for 2.26am tomorrow.
Fiji’s convincing win over one of their traditional rivals will boost confidence as they continue their push for silverware in Spain. The side’s defensive effort was equally impressive, keeping New Zealand scoreless throughout the contest while scoring six unanswered tries.
