Fiji can expect 1–2 cyclones this season, one likely to be severe

The Fiji Meteorological Service has released its Tropical Cyclone (TC) Outlook for the 2025–2026 season, warning that one to two tropical cyclones are likely to pass through Fiji’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) between November 2024 and April 2025.

Of these, one is expected to reach severe tropical cyclone status, Category 3 or higher.

Aside from full-fledged tropical cyclones, the Fiji Meteorological Service warns of the impacts of tropical disturbances or depressions that do not develop into cyclones but still pose serious risks.

The broader Regional Specialized Meteorological Centre (RSMC) Nadi-Tropical Cyclone Centre (TCC) anticipates five to six TCs across its Area of Responsibility (AoR), slightly below the average of seven cyclones per season.

Forecasts indicate 2 to 5 TCs are expected west of the Dateline, which is a near or above average risk and 2 to 3 TCs east of the Dateline, which is a below average risk.

As for severe cyclones (Category 3-5), 1 to 2 severe TCs are expected for the region (below the average of 3), 1 to 2 severe TCs west of the Dateline (near average), 0 to 1 severe TCs east of the Dateline (below average).

The Fiji Meteorological Service is urging all communities to remain alert and prepared throughout the cyclone season, and to follow all official warnings and advisories as they are issued.
