Fiji breaks from previous alignment with Israel, abstains in key vote on Palestine statehood

Listen to this article:

Fiji was among 12 countries that abstained from voting on a resolution endorsing the New York Declaration, which supports the implementation of the two-state solution and the establishment of an independent State of Palestine.

The resolution was passed at the UN General Assembly with overwhelming support: 142 nations voted in favour, 10 opposed it, including the United States and Israel.

12 countries abstained, including Fiji. Fiji’s abstention marks a departure from its earlier voting patterns, where it had consistently supported Israel in similar UN forums.

In past General Assembly votes, Fiji has been part of a small group of nations backing Israel, often in line with Western allies.

Palestinian authorities welcomed the overwhelming support for the resolution, praising the leadership of Saudi Arabia and France.

The Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs called for immediate implementation of the declaration’s provisions, urging the international community to pressure Israel to end its occupation, halt the use of starvation as a weapon of war, and release prisoners and hostages.

The resolution makes the New York Declaration an official UN document and reinforces calls for renewed commitment to the two-state solution as the only viable path to lasting peace in the region.
