FIJI is the largest exporter from the Pacific region of fresh produce to New Zealand, according to New High Commission first secretary Adam Crichton.

Mr Crichton told the Western Division mini agricultural trade show that opened in Nadi on Thursday that Fiji supplies more than 80 per cent of fresh produce from the Pacific region.

“As a result, Fiji has a unique position in the New Zealand market,” he said.

“Our market at home is worth about $2.7billion and we cannot meet all of this demand locally. There is a massive opportunity for Fiji to export tropical fruits and vegetables that cannot be grown in New Zealand due to our climate and to supplement domestic production in New Zealand.”

Mr Crichton said these fresh produce exports were significant for communities and farmers and the wider Fijian economy.

“They make a valuable contribution towards the trade pact that has been set by our prime ministers when they committed to reaching $2b in two-way trade by 2030.

“Of course, New Zealand also benefits from getting access to Fiji’s high-quality fruit and vegetables in our supermarkets, restaurants and local markets.”

“This facility here in Nadi supports an estimated $800,000 worth of trade which corresponds to about 500 tonnes of fresh produce.”

“We are also pleased to be supporting research efforts in the Sigatoka Valley, promoting climate-smart agriculture and resilient farming systems.’

The mini agricultural trade show ended yesterday.
