Fiji Water Flying Fijians are aiming to start their Pacific Nations Cup (PNC) campaign on a high note, and coach Mick Byrne believes the squad has the right mix of experience and fresh energy to defend their title.
Among the players tasked with helping Fiji retain the trophy is Olympic silver medalist Joji Nasova, who makes his first major run-in fifteens rugby after a successful sevens career.
“Joji’s not a young player. He’s played tournaments all around the world, this is his first proper go at fifteens at this level.” Byrne said.
Byrne added that Nasova will benefit from the guidance of seasoned players like Seta Tamanivalu as he adjusts to the team’s systems.
“It’s good to have someone like Seta around, who’s been there a long time, to help Joji work through the systems we’re focusing on,” Byrne said.
Nasova’s transition comes at a critical time as Fiji prepares to face Tonga in their opening match next Saturday at HFC Bank Stadium in Suva.
Byrne said the inclusion of players like Nasova strengthens the squad and provides depth heading into a competitive tournament.
“We see it as an opportunity, not a setback,” he said.
With Nasova’s first major fifteen’s run coinciding with Fiji’s bid to retain the title, all eyes will be on Nasova to see if he can translate his sevens pedigree onto the bigger stage.
Byrne is confident that he can rise to the challenge.
“Joji is signed with the Drua. He’s choosing a career in 15s, which is really good. He’s not a young player; he’s an experienced player. He’s played tournaments all around the world. This is his first go at 15s at this level.”
Meanwhile, Fiji takes on Tonga at 3pm, at the HFC Bank Stadium next Saturday.
