The FIJI Water Flying Fijians claimed a resounding victory over Samoa in their opening Pacific Nations Cup match, securing a 42-16 win.
The match started with an early try from openside flanker Kitione Salawa, giving Fiji a strong start just three minutes into the game. However, Samoa quickly responded with a try of their own to take a 10-5 lead.
Despite Samoa increasing their lead with a penalty kick, Fiji bounced back with a try from center Iosefo Masi, showcasing their offensive prowess.
Masi’s try brought Fiji within one point of Samoa at 13-12.
Fiji faced adversity when lock Temo Mayanavanua was sent to the sin bin, allowing Samoa to extend their lead with another penalty kick for a score of 16-12. Yet, Fiji managed to close the gap right before halftime with a successful penalty kick from flyhalf Caleb Muntz, making it 16-15.
In the second half, Fiji continued their strong performance, scoring a penalty kick to take the lead at 18-16. Salawa then scored his second try after a maul from a lineout, boosting Fiji’s lead to 25-16.
Fiji’s attack showed no signs of slowing down as they executed a set piece play, resulting in a try from halfback Frank Lomani after a kick from winger Epeli Momo. Muntz converted to give Fiji a 32-16 advantage.
Further tries followed for Fiji, including one from fullback Vuate Karawalevu after a line break, extending their lead to 37-16.
Salawa sealed the victory with his third try of the match, bringing the final score to 42-16 in favor of Fiji.
