Fiji athletes dazzle in track and field

With the Pacific Mini Games concluding today in Koror, Palau, Team Fiji has is ranked third on the overall medal tally.

Fiji has 22 gold medals, 27 silver and 21 bronze.

Running away in first place is Pacific powerhouse Tahiti with a whopping total of 64 gold, 37 silver and 22 bronze.

Samoa is second with 27 gold, 14 silver and 20 bronze medals.

Levelled on 22 gold with Fiji is Australia but they sat in fourth place with nine silver and 11 bronze.

Fiji’s tally was boosted in athletics where athletes won medals from both track and field events on Monday night.

Ratu Sukuna Memorial School’s Loata Lewageena and Brienna Rabakewa won silver and bronze respectively in the senior women’s discus throw.

Lewageena won silver with a throw of 48.15m while Rabakewa threw 45.26m to settle for bronze.

In the sand, Frederico Miller claimed silver in the men’s triple jump with a leap of 13.89m while Nawaka in Nadi lad Samuela Vunivalu scooped bronze with a jump of 13.70m.

Three gold medals were won from individual track events, Errol Qaqa dazzling in golden style in the men’s 100m hurdles, the consistent Yeshnil Karan dominated the men’s 5000m with a time of 15m 27.62 seconds while Heleina Young scooped gold in the women’s 400m race.

Reki Roberts won bronze in the women’s high jump and the men and women’s 4x100m relay teams both won silver.
