As Fiji joins the rest of the region in marking International Human Rights Day today, the Pacific Sexual and Gender Diversity Network (PSGDN) is calling for stronger protection of dignity, safety and equality for all people — including those of diverse sexual orientations and gender identities.

PSGDN Interim CEO Loata Tucika says LGBTQI+ people across the Pacific continue to face violence, harassment and discrimination, and urged governments, faith-based groups and communities to work together to create safer and more inclusive environments.

“LGBTQI+ people in our region continue to face human rights challenges. It is vital that states and communities work together to create safe and inclusive environments for everyone,” Ms Tucika said.

She highlighted ongoing work under the DFAT-funded Equality Collaboration with ILGA Oceania and DIVA for Equality, aimed at strengthening regional advocacy and supporting protective legislation.

Ms Tucika noted that Fiji and other Pacific nations have seen targeted attacks in recent years, further fuelled by online hate and gaps in legal safeguards.

She said states have a duty to prevent violence, ensure accountability, and remove policies that unjustly criminalise people based on their identity or expression.

“Upholding human rights strengthens families, communities and societies,” she said, calling for renewed commitment to protection, inclusion and cultural sensitivity across the region.
