Seasoned Fiji Airports firefighters who would soon be promoted to senior roles have been told that every travelling public expected them to control the uncontrollable.

The promotion follows graduation from the Airport Rescue and Fire Fighting Services (ARFFS) month-long training.

Speaking at the graduation of these nine firefighters from Labasa, Rotuma, Nausori and Nadi International Airport, Fiji Airports chief executive Mesake Nawari  said their skills were important and every second smattered.

““This kind of training is critical and should be ongoing,” he said.

“What sets you beyond in this regard is the simple fact that you can’t talk down, or negotiate with, or smother with kindness, a fire. You are dealing with an enemy that cannot reason and has no conscience. You are dealing with an enemy that only you and no other group-no other group-can deal with.

“From on-board medical emergencies to aircraft emergencies or fires, we can count on our ARFFS unit to respond to any call with efficiency, proficiency and agility.”
