Fiji was among 54 countries that abstained as the United Nations General Assembly adopted a new resolution proclaiming 14 December as the International Day against Colonialism in All Its Forms and Manifestations, to be observed annually from 2025.
The resolution was passed by a recorded vote of 116 in favour, 2 against — the United States and Israel — and 54 abstentions.
The new observance aims to highlight the ongoing impact of colonialism and promote efforts to address its contemporary forms.
The UN also approved territory-specific resolutions concerning American Samoa, Guam, New Caledonia, French Polynesia, the British and US Virgin Islands, Tokelau, and others, as well as a decision on Gibraltar.
