The appearance of national 7s players in the Viwa rugby men’s team at the Fiji Bitter Nawaka 7s compelled organisers to disqualify them from competing any further.
The team left Prince Charles Park after midday yesterday when it was found a majority of the team were players from the national team.
Fiji Bitter Nawaka 7s tournament director Jeff Tamata said their disqualification was made out of concern for the grassroots teams playing in the three-day leg.
“We weighed our options and what we believed in is the grassroots development of clubs in Fiji,” Tamata explained.
Tamata added if the Viwa team did win , it would not be regarded fairly.
“Had Viwa won the award, it would not be fair because Viwa is not represented by the players from Viwa,”he said.
Meanwhile, the Nawaka 7s will end tomorrow.
