THE Fiji sevens team have trained according to their schedule at the Hamilton 7s in New Zealand in two weeks.
National coach Gareth Baber said during their training sessions at their base at the Uprising Beach Resort in Pacific Harbour, the team trained according to their game times at the Hamilton 7s where they would play two games on day one and three on day two.
The new HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series format that will be used at the Hamilton and Sydney 7s will see only the pool winners go straight to the semi-finals after the last pool games.
“We are looking at this weekend where we will mimic the times that we have for the competition down in Hamilton with two games for day one and three for day two and we have done our sessions based around that,” Baber said.
“We have always had a plan of how the training would look like through this block in terms of the condition and elements of what these players need,” he added.
Baber said the ground at the Uprising Beach Resort was accessible where the team was also able to train in the evenings.
“Obviously that gives us the opportunity here, especially with the floodlights on this pitch where we have the opportunity where we can train in the nights and that is important as we go through the season as well.
“They are getting used to shorter and sharper movements on the field and long fitness session that they have done but that’s the necessity, so obviously as you come towards the tournament like Hamilton and Sydney with a two weeks turnaround, there has to be a balance of what you need to do and what is overkill,” said Baber.
