Fight virus

RELIGIOUS bodies, villagers and members of the larger Fijian community have been urged to stand up and fight the risk of Chikungunya in Fiji together.

The call from the Health Minister, Jone Usamate, followed the laboratory confirmation of an imported case of Chikungunya virus infection in Fiji.

“For anything that is mosquito-borne related, the message always is destroy mosquitoes’ breeding places,” Mr Usamate said.

“This is a message we have been harping on from the beginning of this year, once we reach the wet season, we want people to be proactive, not wait for local town agents to come around and spray the mosquitoes, the population must go out there and terminate mosquitoes, look for mosquito breeding grounds.

“We ask the general public and everyone to make this a priority and while there have been some cases, the only thing we can do right now other than managing the cases that have been presented is to destroy and terminate mosquitoes.”
