Festive volleyball brings communities together

KEEPING the youth engaged and occupied during the festive season is the primary goal of the Matasawalevu Volleyball tournament, which kicked off yesterday in Naibita, Wainibuka, Tailevu.

The competition began with the men’s category, featuring a total of 14 teams, while the women’s competition is set to commence on the final day.

Jerry Cakau, the tournament director, expressed satisfaction with the turnout on day one, noting the participation of teams from various regions including Nadi, Suva, Wainibuka, Rakiraki, and Tailevu.

The tournament is sponsored by the Matasawalevu family, who will be awarding prizes to participating teams.

“The main aim of the competition is, we want to promote Volleyball competitions in the rural areas, and also, we want to promote Volleyball at grassroot level,” said Cakau.

“Along the rural areas we know they play Volleyball, but its good for us to promote competitive Volleyball for the youths of the community.”

He adds the inclusion of national players and former national players adds a heightened level of competition and excitement to the event.

It showcases the talent and skills of these individuals while inspiring and motivating younger players.

“We are also thankful or great to see national players and former national players also taking part, it gives a different level of competition for all.

“We all know this is the festive season, and the organisers aim also is to combat crime, we know there will be a lot of drinking and other things happening, so we like to give this opportunity for the youths to come and enjoy the sport and enjoy.”

As the tournament progresses towards the final day, organisers encourage the community to come out in numbers to support the teams and enjoy the festivities.
