A feasibility study on the $300million grant given by the People’s Republic of China for the Vanua Levu road projects has been completed.
Public Works Minister Ro Filipe Tuisawau revealed this in Parliament this week, adding that the bidding and tendering for project designs were underway with technical documentation works. He was responding to a question from Assistant Minister for Education Iliesa Vanawalu for an update on the Vanua Levu road projects.
“Once the design is finalised, other necessary preliminary works will be carried out prior to the commencement and the mobilisation for the project,” Ro Filipe said.
“This project will cover 15 kilometres of Nabouwalu Rd from the sealed end bridge to Nasolo bridge; 35 kilometres Wailevu Coast Rd, that is, from Nabalebale junction to Doguru; and 32 kilometres Natewa West Rd, that is, from Buca Bay to Korotasere. The project will also include upgrading of five bridges along the Nabouwalu Rd, upgrading of 10 crossings to proper bridges along Wailevu West Coast Rd, and an upgrade of nine bridges and two crossings up to standard level along the Natewa West Coast Rd.
“That will have a significant impact on the socio-economic development of Vanua Levu.”
Ro Filipe said rural communities living along the roads being upgraded would also have better access to Government services and offices, and to markets.
“It enhances accessibility, reduces travel time and connects communities more efficiently. That not only supports the movement of people in Vanua Levu, but also stimulates local economic activities, such as agriculture, trade and small business operations.”
Ro Filipe also acknowledged the People’s Republic of China for their continued assistance and support through the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA).
“In particular, China’s Belt and Road Initiative Project earmarked for Vanua Levu.
“This project is implemented through the Office of the Prime Minister, under the agreement signed by His Excellency, the People’s Republic of China Ambassador with the Honourable Prime Minister. The Ministry of Public Works and Meteorological Services, through the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) will provide necessary technical support and assistance. This project aims to improve Vanua Levu roads, in particular parts of Nabouwalu, Makolei Rd in Bua, Natewa West Rd in Cakaudrove and Nabalebale/Naviavia/Dawara roads in Cakaudrove.”
