Suspended Commissioner of Fiji Corrections Service (FCS), Dr Jalesi Nakarawa has defended his leadership and expressed confidence in the tribunal process that will investigate him.

In a statement, he has emphasised his commitment to the values and integrity of the FCS.

“Institutional leadership requires continuity, humility, and respect for the process,” he stated.

“I cannot stay silent while my leadership is publicly misrepresented and while the work of dedicated officers across the service is undermined by unsubstantiated claims.”

Dr Nakarawa added acting Commissioner Sevuloni Naucukidi, who assumed the role following Dr. Nakarawa’s suspension, has introduced significant changes within the FCS.

“An acting role demands restraint, not overreach,” Dr. Nakarawa noted, criticising the rapid changes as potentially destabilising to the institution’s morale and continuity.

“This is a temporary, caretaker appointment, not a mandate for structural overhaul or institutional reinvention.”

“However, since assuming office, he has undertaken significant actions, including suspending or reversing key reforms and projects, while functioning as though his position were permanent.”

“The Fiji Corrections Service requires leadership grounded in truth, fairness, and accountability.”
