Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) Acting Commissioner Salote Panapasa says they are happy with government’s decision to continually invest in the infrastructure of FCS’s facilities around the country.

She said this after the announcement by Finance Minister Professor Biman Prasad that the FCS has been allocated $47 million in the 2023/2024 National Budget.

Prof Prasad announced that of the $47m allocated to FCS, $550,000 would be used to fund 30 new positions, $4.2m for inmates’ food ration and for the rehabilitation and the Yellow Ribbon program, and $4.7m for the upgrade and maintenance of several FCS facilities around the country.

“The FCS is happy to have a share of the pie considering that the country is already facing hard times with limited funds and resources against demand,” Ms Panapasa said.

“This is an economical budget, so it addresses what the FCS needs right now and that is continued infrastructural improvements so that our men and women can work in the right conditions and deliver excellent services to our clients, those under our care.

“We are also delighted with the increased allocation of the FCS business enterprise for the upskilling and rehabilitation of inmates whilst earning a revenue for the Government.”
