The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) has given its final approval for the indirect acquisition of Digicel Fiji (Pte) Limited by Telstra Corporation Limited (Telstra).
The FCCC received a joint submission from Digicel Pacific Limited and Telstra for the indirect acquisition of Digicel Fiji on October 29 last year.
FCCC chief executive officer Joel Abraham said they had conducted a thorough investigation and assessed the proposed transaction over the last few months.
He said they sought submissions from relevant stakeholders and ensured the entire process was conducted in a comprehensive and transparent manner.
“The parties to this transaction were quite forthcoming and we were able to work with them in assessing the potential competitive effects of this transaction for the Fijian market,” Mr Abraham said in a statement issued last night.
“FCCC approved the transaction today (Thursday), subject to certain conditions which will help FCCC monitor the market more effectively.
“FCCC exists to promote effective competition and an informed market, encourage fair trade in markets and protect customers and businesses from restrictive practices.
“We assess every application with that in mind and only grant approvals when a proposed transaction is in line with those values.”
Digicel Fiji is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Digicel Pacific, and the proposed acquisition of Digicel Pacific will result in an indirect acquisition by Telstra of Digicel Fiji.
