A father-of-two was jailed for life last year for killing his wife in Rakiraki in 2022.
Vinay Darshan, 45, who has a heart condition, was convicted of a count each of murder, incitement to commit murder and arson.
Records show that one of the vehicles owned by Darshan was driven by a man named Ronal, who was involved in an extra marital relationship with the victim, Aleshmin Pratap.
During this period, the relationship between Darshan and his wife was deteriorating, and the couple was facing ongoing domestic issues.
On August 19 that year, Darshan asked Viliame Nayacalevu, a cane cutter, to kill his wife. Nayacalevu refused and later told his cane-cutting gang leader and fellow workers about Darshan’s request.
Darshan also told one Bas Deo of his intention to kill his wife and burn both her body and the house to destroy evidence.
Between 11pm and midnight on the night of August 23, Darshan struck his wife twice on the side of her head with a piece of timber before setting the house on fire and leaving the premises with his two sons.
Justice Samuela Qica ordered that Darshan serve a minimum term of 18 years.
