VANUA Levu residents will soon have access to the world’s biggest fast-food chain McDonalds.

In an interview in Nadi on Monday, McDonald’s Fiji managing director Marc McElrath revealed their plans of opening a brand-new outlet in Lami next year and signing of an agreement for a new fast-food restaurant to be built in the northern town of Labasa.

“So, we are working on a new branch in Lami at the moment that should start construction early next year,” Mr McElrath said.

“And we are just about to sign an agreement for a new McDonald’s to be built in Labasa.

“That is still in the early days, but we are hoping that will take McDonalds to Vanua Levu in the north in future.”

The franchise, which opened its doors to Fijians on May 1, 1996 in Nadi celebrated its 30th anniversary with key suppliers and invited guests.

“We started in 1996 with one restaurant and progressively grew to more and more restaurants throughout Fiji,” Mr McElrath said.

“For me, the biggest achievement is the number of people that we have trained and who have gone on to become successful in many industries in Fiji- the tourism and hotel industry.

“McDonald’s is a good training ground for a lot of our younger people when they come out of school, and a lot of them have moved on to bigger and better jobs throughout Fiji.”
