Farmers register for agriculture program

More than 200 farmers in Bau, Nausori, gathered at the Matai community hall in Naila, Bau, yesterday to register for the Ministry of Agriculture’s cash for cultivation program.

Ministry of Agriculture assistant for Bau Safiya Raqoli said there were three teams based at different locations to register farmers and assist them during this pandemic.

“This distribution is for the farmers who will be assisted with the cash for cultivation program which is mainly for the farmers who have more than one acre of land,” she said.

“The program is open to everyone, whether they have mataqali or lease land as it is to assist farmers in cultivation during this pandemic.”

Mokani Village headman Samuela Madraitabua said the program would assist villagers purchase seeds and equipment needed for farming.

“This program will benefit us a lot as we will be able to buy seeds, fertilisers and equipment which we don’t have now,” he said.

“We usually lack equipment in the village that can make our farming more easy and increase our yield and this assistance will help us improve that.”
