LAND lease issues and access to water dominated the issues of concern to sugarcane growers during consultations with Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama in Nadi last week.
Lautoka Cane Producers Association president Praveen Singh said after meeting the PM, many growers went away satisfied that their views and concerns were heard and that something would be done about their plight.
“Just the fact that he took the time to come and visit us was a big thing because the growers got to speak to the PM in his capacity as the Sugar Minister.
“We are very grateful that he directed the Lands Department and the iTaukei Land Trust Board staff to expedite lease renewals and once this is done, farmers who have been idle because of uncertainty over leases will start planting again,” Mr Singh said.
The lack of access to clean drinking water at many rural communities in Nadi was also highlighted during the consultation.
“We were very happy with the PM’s assurance that water projects were a priority for his government and he has promised us that water projects will be undertaken soon.
“We acknowledge that a commitment has been made and we are aware that it won’t happen overnight.”
The Lautoka Cane Producers Association hosted the PM and industry stakeholders to meals and refreshments at the forum.
