THE first festival held to commemorate the plight of the girmitiya has returned to Nadi with colours and flavours as it officially began at Koroivolu Park on Saturday.
Barbecue stalls, entertainment rides and bargain shoppers were out in full force for the Fiji Airways Nadi Farmers Carnival.
Carnival president Vyas Deo Sharma said the revived carnival had already proved to be a success.
“We intend to give the Farmers Carnival a different tone and flavour and in provision, additional attraction,” he said.
“The more the merrier, they say and indeed, a country where we have such a paucity of entertainment opportunities for our citizens as well as overseas visitors, people are always looking for other opportunities for fun.
“The first carnival was held to commemorate 125 years of girmitya in Fiji.
“It had a limited objective as it was purely a historical event.
“The carnival was held the following year and then it fizzled out.
“We have decided to revive the Nadi Farmers Carnival once again for the people of Nadi.”
The theme of the week-long event is “Farmers and Climate Change,” he added.
