Loyal Fiji rugby fan Kinisimere Rabulugaga, known to many as ‘Bu Kini’, was laid to rest on Wednesday, June 4, in Saunaka village in Nadi.
She passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 31, at the age of 88.
Originally from Waitolu in Naitasiri, Bu Kini was loved by many for her cheerful nature, good heart, and sense of humour. Her love for Fiji rugby and the national team was unmatched, and her presence at rugby games will never be forgotten.
Whether it was at the HFC Bank Stadium, a Naitasiri match, or a local game in Nadi, Bu Kini was always there proudly waving her Fiji flag, cracking jokes, and finding herself a spot in the “VIP” area, even without a ticket.
She didn’t let anything stop her from cheering for her team. Her white hair and bright smile made her easy to spot, and her loud, funny comments often made the whole crowd laugh.
Videos of Bu Kini joking around or giving interviews were often shared online, making her a favourite not just in Fiji but among Fijians around the world.
At home in Saunaka, she lived with her only child, Eneri Varo, 42. He remembers trying to stop her from going out because of her age, but she never listened.
“She always had a happy spirit. She would just put on her jaba and walk out the door,” he said.
In 2013, during the rebranding of Fiji Airways, she insisted on going to the launch.
“I told her to stay home,” Eneri said with a laugh.
“But she told me, ‘I will go and see the new flight’.”
Their home was always full of children, who loved spending time with her.
“I used to tell her to stop entertaining them.
“But she treated them like they were the same age, always joking around and making them laugh,” he added.
Bu Kini began to forget things. Eneri kept her at home, cooking for her and looking after her with love and care. On the morning of May 31, he made her breakfast like always. But when he called her, there was no answer.
“I found her lying quietly on her bed,” he said.
“She had gone peacefully.”
Bu Kini’s love for rugby, her laughter, and her joyful presence will always be remembered. She reminded us of what it means to be a true fan loyal, loud, and full of heart.
Rest in peace, Bu Kini. Your voice and spirit will always echo in the stands.
